On March 7, 1990 there was a major ice storm over much of the state. In western, central, and north central Iowa one half to one inch of ice accumulated while in west central Iowa especially in Crawford and Carroll counties there was three to five inches of ice accumulation. In Des Moines over 270,000 customers were without power which accounted for 65% of the Des Moines metro area…30-40% of the area was without cable and 25% without phone service. It took nearly a week to restore the outages. Damage from the storm was reported at over 60 million dollars. A day after the storm in east central iowa two tornadoes touched down.
