Administrators at the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration (NOAA) are making moves to promote their "Corporate Identity" by renaming the National Hurricane Center and National Weather Service, according to an article published in the Miami Herald. The new organizations would be called the "NOAA Hurricane Center" and the "NOAA Weather Service". The proposed changes are being vigorously opposed by new NHC director Bill Proenza, who said, "what's happening is scary."NOAA has made available a web page to the public to see what proposed changes to their web pages would look like. Here it is.

well, this can be viewed two different ways: change is not always bad and somethings are better left as is.
personally, i don't see what the big fuss is about. the webpages look nice and as for the name changes, it will take some getting used to that's all.
i think they should go through with the changes.
and by the way, at the bottom of the journal entry, "here" should be "hear."

I think the idea of promoting a "corporate" identity brings along with it the image of corporate interests, which, accurate or not, won't sit well with many people.
I, too, am skeptical. I don't understand how renaming these two organizations will make them work more effectively together or better serve the public, and I don't see how NOAA can justify spending money on the public awareness campaign that will ensue when the renaming occurs. The NWS and The NHC are already running on tight budgets, and it seems irresponsible to do this for the sake of image.
