Damage Survey Report From Cumming and Norwalk

The National Weather Service (NWS) survey team worked with Warren County Emergency Management in surveying the tornado and wind damage in the Norwalk and Cumming areas. The survey team confirmed two different tornado tracks. Click here for more information.

Lightning Safety Awareness Week

Last year at least 47 people were killed by lightning; one-quarter of whom were children. Almost all lightning deaths and injuries could be prevented by following simple safety rules. This year will be the fourth annual National Lightning Safety Awareness Week, June 24-30, 2007. Lightning Safety Week is held the last full week of June each year. Tornadoes can happen anywhere. Canada is not immune to severe weather. Click here to see the video of a tornado in southwest Manitoba. The storm chasers were within 200 yards of the tornado as it crossed the road. The tornado remained over rural areas.

Training T-Storms

Slow moving and training thunderstorms continue to be a problem in Johnson and Cedar County southeast into Illinois. The western and northwestern edge of the thunderstorms keep redeveloping and may back build a bit. There is another complex of storms in western Iowa moving into the central portion of the state. This will merge with the storms in eastern Iowa shortly and possibly continue the training storm for the next 3-4 hours.

Tornado Warning for Southern Butler County until 4:45 PM. At 3:51 PM trained spotters reported a tornado 14 miles southwest of Clarksville moving NE at 15 mph.

Severe T-Storm Warning for northern Black Hawk County until 4:30 PM. At 3:21 PM a t-storm capable of producing golf ball sized hail and winds in excess of 70 mph was located near Cedar Falls and moving NE at 10 mph.

Severe T-Storm Warning for Southern Butler County until 4:00 PM. At 3:04 PM Doppler radar indicated a severe thunderstorm near Aplington or 31 miles west of Waterloo moving east at 15 mph. Large hail is possible out of this storm.

Moderate Risk Severe Weather

Daytime heating has resulted in the air mass to become strongly unstable ahead of the storm in western Iowa. The combination of an expected cold pool of air and the development of stronger low level winds should increase the damaging wind threat. As the storms begin to accelerate southeastward into eastern Iowa.
